Muhang Li.
Selected work.

I work on spatial design, CG simulation and product design. I use models and prototypes to test ideas before they are built.

Design experience

At teamLab, I work on CG simulation, visual evaluation and spatial planning for installations. At the University of Tokyo, I worked on research projects that combined product design and prototyping.

Interior Camera 1 CG study of the Kyoto spherical light installation

Spatial design / Optical simulation

Spherical Crystallized Light

Planning the space around a limited viewing angle.

I recreated the installation’s reflection and refraction with shaders and scripts. I then used the simulation to plan the space and check sightlines for visitors of different heights, while working within power, fire-safety and cable-routing constraints.

Spatial design / CG simulation

Resonating Microcosms - Solidified Light

Luminous forms and their reflections.

I calculated three layouts and used CG to evaluate visitor circulation, sightlines and overlap between the ovoids and their reflections.

Media façade and signage visualization · UBS Digital Art Museum

teamLab Borderless Hamburg

Artwork and signage within a transparent façade.

I designed the signage visuals and façade composition using transparent LED. The artwork, signs and trees behind the screen form a layered view that I explored in CG.

Bubble Installation — Anaheim

Finding the scale of a suspended installation.

I tested sphere sizes and spacing in CG, comparing how each arrangement filled the space from three viewpoints.

Lorrylaugh mobile playground concept and themed play environments

Play space / Service design

Lorrylaugh

A playground that travels.

Lorrylaugh is a mobile playground concept built around a semi-trailer. A forest-themed space combines climbing and storytelling, with smaller play pieces that extend outdoors.

How I work

Research / Prototyping / Review

01 / Frame

Understand the brief

I start by identifying what the project needs to achieve and what limits the design. Research and discussions help me decide what to test.

02 / Make

Develop and test ideas

I make models and prototypes to compare options. Depending on the project, these may be CG scenes, physical models or interactive interfaces.

03 / Resolve

Refine the design

I review the results and revise the design. I check visual details alongside technical requirements and production constraints.

Technical practice

Tools I build for CG work

At teamLab, I also develop tools for preparing data, controlling complex scenes and testing materials.

Data & procedural tools
Python tools for exporting object positions and parameters, and placing large numbers of objects from specified values.
Real-time scene performance
Visibility controls with LOD-like behavior to manage which objects are shown in complex scenes.
Materials & shaders
Custom shaders, including a shader for rendering chromatic dispersion.

About me

I'm Muhang Li, a designer and technical artist. My work includes spatial design, CG simulation, product design and visual identity.

At teamLab, I use CG simulation to evaluate visual effects and plan spaces before physical production.

At the University of Tokyo’s DLX Design Lab, I worked with researchers to develop design concepts and prototypes.

My graduate research explored remembrance and death anxiety through interactive systems, using a Research through Design approach.
